Please note: Be sure to go to a registration desk first, show your credentials and get an access bracelet. An FFP2 mask must be worn throughout the University Hospital building. This rule applies to all outpatients, individuals accompanying patients and visitors.

I am an inpatient visitor

Firstly, go to a registration desk and present your current proof of a negative COVID-19 test (in writing or digital) and your photo ID. They will give you an access wristband to confirm that you have been checked, which you need to wear during your visit to the University Hospital.

Please note - only the following tests are accepted at the registration desks:

  • PCR tests from an accredited laboratory, taken no more than 48 hours before
  • Rapid antigen tests from a certified test centre, taken no more than 24 hours before

The following rules apply in the University Hospital:

  • FFP2 masks must be worn throughout the grounds and within the buildings
  • Visiting rules:
    • Only one visitor per patient each day
    • Visits should be no longer than one hour
    • Visiting hours daily from 15:00 to 19:00

If you arrive unprepared as a visitor without a negative test result, you can arrange to have a test done on our campus free of charge at the Infection Control Centre (ISZ), Building 80, directions
on weekdays until 15:00.

You can also arrange to have a test done free of charge close to the University Hospital outside of the Infection Control Centre opening hours. To arrange a free test there, download and complete this Federal Ministry of Health form and have it stamped at the registration desk before visiting the test centre. This confirms that you are registered as a visitor to a patient at the University Hospital and so are eligible for a free rapid test.

  • Only permitted in justified exceptional circumstances:
    • Parents, guardians, carers or other people who have to legally represent the patient
    • Individuals urgently required to accompany the patient for their medical treatment (e.g. patients with a mobility disability or with impaired sight or hearing)
    • Interpreters if the patient has insufficient understanding of the language

  • FFP2 masks must be worn

Questions & answers about your stay at the University Hospital Cologne

As a visitor, can I also arrange to have a rapid test on site?

In addition to the many certified coronavirus test centres in Cologne and the surrounding area, you also have the option of taking a rapid antigen test at the University Hospital Cologne.

Where and how can I obtain certification that I have recovered from the coronavirus?

The Center for Infection Control at the University Hospital Cologne can provide individuals who have recovered from the coronavirus with proof of their test result. Please e-mail the following information to corona-genesene@uk-koeln.de: postal address, first name and surname and date of birth. You will receive the certificate in the post within two to four working days. Alternatively, you can collect the certificate from the Infection Control Centre (Building 11) on Tuesday and Thursday between the hours of 12:00 and 14:00 (with the exception of public holidays).

Do I have to wear a mask in the University Hospital Cologne?

Yes, an FFP2 mask must be worn throughout the entire University Hospital. This rule applies to all outpatients, individuals accompanying patients and visitors.

What should I pay particular attention to when wearing a mask?

A mask will only protect you and our employees if it is worn properly and replaced regularly. It is important that your mouth and nose are covered. The face mask must also be dry. Viruses have a free rein if the material is moist or wet.

Is there hand sanitiser available to use within the hospital premises?

Hand sanitiser is available at central points in all buildings. You can sanitise your hands at any time.

How are the premises and medical equipment cleaned?

The hygiene standards in the University Hospital are and were very stringent even before the coronavirus pandemic and have now been further intensified. All rooms and medical equipment are thoroughly cleaned regularly by our trained personnel.

Are patients tested for coronavirus?

All inpatients are tested for coronavirus on admission.

What should I do if I have an appointment at the University Hospital Cologne and experience cold symptoms?

Please cancel your appointment at the University Hospital if you experience symptoms of a cold.
